Lately...
I've been creating sound sculptures for large-scale environments. Each sound sculpture is a dynamic system designed around the characteristics, function and sentiment of the space in which it is to live. The sculpture captures live audio from its environment, distills it to its resonant essence, and mixes it into the multi-channel soundtrack of ambience. The sound sculpture is alive and responsive to its environment.
My most recent work involves unique sound sculptures that are made from the fusion of ancient, organic forms and technology: gourds, speakers and multi-channel, interactive soundscapes. Gourds are significant as they are the first domesticated plant and have traveled around the globe millennia ago with our ancestors. They were used as vessels in ancient times before ceramic technology and they continue to be used in cultures around the world today in musical instruments as resonators. I use them in sound sculptures as vessels that carry the sound of human activity in the modern world, storing sound in a collective memory, and transporting it from place to place, paralleling the journey these vessels made with human ancestors tens of thousands of years ago.
